Ideal Furniture for a Childs Bedroom

Ideal Furniture for a Childs Bedroom

There are rooms in the house which can go relatively unchanged for several years, however with a child's room; it is a constant development project. However, by purchasing key pieces of furniture, you can provide an ideal bedroom for a child to grow up in.

The main area all bedrooms have to consider is storage and this is even more important within a child's room, due to the amount of toys and games they accumulate. Ideally, the choice of wardrobes is of paramount importance. Not only can they house clothing, they can also house toys. The best wardrobes to choose are those with in built shelving as while children are still young, the bottom shelves are easy for them to reach.

By thinking practically, a good storage system should move through the transitional ages of a child and modular bedroom furniture is ideally suited to modern children's lifestyles. The functionality of changing the look of a child's room from pre-teens to fully grown teenagers can be done quickly and much more cheaply than buying new furniture. As all that is required is a change of doors, to match the look of a newly decorated room.

Another key piece of furniture for a child's room is a desk, the main feature which needs to be considered is, is this desk practical in five years time? As a desk for a child will eventually need to accommodate a PC, maybe a games station, plus school work and not forgetting drawers for discs, USB sticks and a myriad of other gadgets and gizmo's a teenager can hoard.

A good solution is a bed with built in storage, these can accommodate a desk and cupboards and some even have a space for a tower unit to go, however most children tend to use a laptop nowadays for portability. However, not every room can hold a bed this size and other storage ideas as suggested. If the child's room is on the small side, a compact desk would be ideal, as they take up minimum space yet have enough shelves and storage to meet the majority of children's needs.

Comfort is also a key factor in bedrooms, alongside the bed other seating options could be considered, one of the most favoured is the bean bag, which is ideal for playing games on or watching TV. They can also be used for when a child has a sleepover, making them quite indispensible in a bedroom.

Furnishing a child's room can be easy and avoiding the possible problems and expense of an ongoing developmental project if the right pieces of furniture are selected in the beginning.

A taster from our blog

One of the rooms that often times if not always threatens the overall look
and feel of a home is the home office. With more and more people working
from home in spare rooms, bijou nooks or trying to intergrate home offices
into day to day living spaces it can feel a bit of a challenge. However
fear not there are a number of tricks of the trade that us designers use to
turn such spaces from being ordinary to extraordinary.

Home office furniture is often times ugly (think desks, chairs, lamps, filing cabinets and so on) so I would recommend thinking outside of the box. For example my desk in my studio at home is an old ornately carved Georgian table which I picked up at a flea market for a song and have sprayed glossy teal. Rather than partnering it with a horrible office chair i have coupled it with a super sweet retro one that looks funky and creates an interesting dialogue.

Heaped on my desk are little piles of books where little posies and scented candles hang out together along with a a fabulous vintage Italian lamp. It softens the look. Next up, house scanners and printers behind doors (in bookcases or cupboards) or plonk on sufaces and then accessorise around to distract the eye. Finally add warmth, layer rugs across floors, heap throws over chairs and add cushions. Cosy comfort coupled with functional practicality is the name of the game.
